What Every Good Painter Needs....

The tools no serious painter should be without...

Here's a List of all the stuff you should try to obtain if you want to become a serious painter. By no means is this what you need to just paint, this is what you will want if you want to make above-average minis...

Acrylic Paints

Acrylic paints are suggested instead of Gloss paints like Testors, because you don't need cleaners or thinner to clean them. Instead, you use water. This helps if you decide to wash your minis using paint, since Acrylics are the only kind that can be used for washing. I suggest Citadel paints, especially the paint set pictured above, since it comes with a decent selection of paints. But, I suggest expanding your paint set by buying more paints. If you can afford the steep price, there is also a Citadel Mega Paint Set, which comes with all their paints, inks, primer and varnish, along with all brushes, modeling flock, PVC glue, and a mini painting guide(but why would you need it, when you have this site??)...

Paint Brushes

I'm sure we all know what paint brushes are used for. Now you just need a decent set of them. Sure, if you bought the Warhammer 40k starter paint set, the brush included is good enough, but you might want to expand your set. Once again, I'm gonna have to recommend Citadel brushes, like the pack shown above(It may have a new package these days, this was an image that I pulled from the internet). But, Testors brushes will work fine. It's your choice, but you should pick based upon your financial situation(how much money you earn or your relatives feed to you every once in a while)....

Primer

This is really to your preference. If you will be painting Mage Knight Metals or other metal minis, this is essential, because it gives the paint something to adhere to. But, with plastics, you can decide whether or not you want this. You can find it in both spray form(like the can shown above) and in small bottles. I can't really recommend any, since I don't paint metal(yet), but I've heard that any kind will work, as long as it is thin enough not to fill in the details too much.

Modeling Flock

Modeling flock isn't for all kinds of minis. On Mage Knight figures, only use it if you plan to just display your minis, since it will obstruct the symbols and point values. But on Mage Knight Metals and other metal minis like D&D or Warhammer, it can improve the look of the mini. All you do is put PVC glue on the base, then dip it in the flock, then let it dry. It adds a very cool effect to your minis...

Inks(No picture available)

Inks are an alternative to using your paints for washing. I don't use them personally, but I've seen minis that have been washed with ink, and they look just as good. I have really only seen inks from Citadel, but I'm sure that other companies like Reaper and Ral Partha probably make inks...
