Make sure you have the materials listed on the right, then proceed to the first step....
- Set yourself up. Make sure you have the appropriate materials, such as the stuff listed on the right. Make sure you are in a well ventillated area. Use newspaper so that you don't get paint on the surface you are painting on. Also, along with the other materials, make sure you have a stack of napkins or a big sheet of paper towels nearby for cleaning your brush.
- If you are using primer, apply it now. Use a brush on primer if you still plan to use the minis in games so that you don't get any on the base, or just cover the base and use spray primer. Or just leave the base uncovered if you plan to paint the base and just display the mini. If you are not using primer, go to step 3.
- Start painting! If you don't have a steady hand for painting little details, try painting the large area where the small areas are located in the color of the small area, then paint over the rest of the large area with the appropriate color. Otherwise, just paint the large areas, leaving the small areas alone, then paint the small areas. And remember, always give areas time to dry before painting over them. Drying times differ with the kind of paint. Paints like Testors, which aren't acrylic, can take several hours, but acrylics like Citadel can take only a few minutes(generally 7-12 if I'm not mistaken).
- Now, if you wish, paint some of your own custom details onto the figure. For example, when I painted my Bone Golem, after I painted his body with Citadel "Skull White", I gave it time to dry, then painted the eyes with "Blood Red" and added a blood flow effect from the eyes down to the teeth. Never be afraid to try an effect that is out of the ordinary.
That's the basics of miniature painting. If you followed these directions, enjoy your work, and have a digital camera, feel free to send me images and I'll post some of them(but don't send too many, I don't think I have much room). Next, the more advanced techniques...
